Austrian wood industry shows grit as challenges threaten

The 1,289 member companies of the Austrian Wood Industry Association reported sales of 9.8 billion euros in 2023, marking an 18.5% decrease from the previous year.

Herbert Jöbstl, Chairman of the Austrian Wood Industry Association, said during a press conference in Vienna that the wood industry had performed relatively well in 2023 despite challenging conditions. He said that the ongoing slump in the construction sector was affecting the wood industry and that industry professionals were observing a trend of decreasing production across Europe and globally.

Nevertheless, the Austrian wood industry remains well-positioned amid the recession. The decline also impacted export figures, with the foreign trade surplus falling to 1.5 billion euros in 2023, a drop of 14%. Despite the challenging business environment, employment levels in the wood industry have remained largely stable.
