Secto Design makes major investment in life cycle assessment

A significant effort and investment for a small family-owned company. This sums up the two years of hard work by the Finnish design lighting manufacturer, Secto Design. The company has conducted a thorough Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), and as a result, Secto Design can disclose the environmental impacts of its production and each product throughout their life cycle from now on.

'Now we can provide customers with information based on verified data. Our customers can be sure that by choosing Secto Design lighting, the sustainability requirements of the project will be fulfilled,' says Joakim Jusélius, second-generation entrepreneur at Secto Design.

Environmentally conscious manufacturing is Secto Design's strong suit. The lamps are handmade at the company's factory in Heinola, Finland, which uses renewable energy and aims for carbon-negative production within the next five years. The main material of the lamps, PEFC-certified birch, is grown sustainably in Finland. A pioneering company, Secto Design has also invested in two Finnish startups, Paptic and Woamy, that develop biodegradable alternatives to plastic packaging.

Secto Design has conducted its LCA work according to the latest version of the EN 15804 standard. Next, the company will use the results of the LCA to create a verified EPD (Environmental Product Declaration) for each lamp in its collection. This information will be published in the EPD library later in 2024. The main issues of Secto Design's sustainability work are already presented on a dedicated page of their website and further developed in the newly published Secto Design Sustainability report.

'Secto Design lamps last from one generation to the next thanks to their timeless design and premium quality,' says Joakim Jusélius. 'We are pleased to now be able to disclose the life cycle of the products using verified data. Without facts, sustainability talk is just empty words.'
