An interview with Castro Lighting:

'We want to inspire future generations to keep the tradition alive, hand-wrought brass work can never be replaced by machinery'

For over four and a half decades, Castro Lighting has illuminated residences, hospitality retreats, and commercial spaces. Since its foundation in 1978, the Portuguese company has focused on skilled craftsmanship, enduring design, and commitment to innovation in its lighting pieces. Recently, the brand showcased their designs at Salone del Mobile in Milan. We interviewed them to learn more about their experience at the fair and their use of traditional Portuguese brass work.

Could you tell us about Castro Lighting's history?
'Driven by a pioneer spirit since 1978, Castro Lighting's long history began with the desire to distribute lighting solutions around the world. The passion for design naturally grew within, as the inspiration came from exciting trips and personal experiences of Mr. Modesto Castro. It took numerous discoveries to gather the necessary skills and courage to gain ground and create a brand with such a strong character as Castro Lighting. The perfect combination of ethics, motivation, hard work, and passion for industrial design, as well as a fascinating journey of discovery, made Castro Lighting internationally known.'

Can you tell us more about the brass work for which Castro Lighting is known?
'Creative brass crafting is an embodiment of the artists' vision, brought to life by their effort and expertise. Castro Lighting production takes place in its factories in Portugal, where the best quality lighting solution are created. The manufacturing process is supervised by experienced professionals who are constantly looking for new and original techniques and approaches. The handling of brass is the history and foundation of Castro Lighting, being its responsibility to inspire and empower future generations to keep the tradition alive. Hand-wrought work can never be replaced by machinery.

Another key element of Castro is that the company is really good at working with brass, and has perfected working with 24k gold-plated brass throughout these years, which has a very precious look that the brand is known for.

At the heart of Castro's journey lies the unwavering passion of its founder alongside the tireless dedication of its skilled artisans. Each piece is meticulously handcrafted, carrying within the indelible mark of traditional Portuguese metal-work techniques intertwined with modern elements. From dazzling classical chandeliers to elegant contemporary lighting creations, Castro Lighting offers a wide range of collections artfully crafted to meet the discerning tastes of interior design enthusiasts and refined connoisseurs.'

You were recently at Salone del Mobile in Milan. What did you think of the fair?
'The fair is getting better and better, a wonderful experience, with many more visitors during the exhibition. We strongly believe that the trade show was very positive and next year, we have already guaranteed a bigger space, with a larger stand and more display capacity to welcome and meet even more guests. This time, the brand showcased a Decor Collection for the first time, which had great feedback. The public was amazed by the New Designs, for instance, Castro Lighting surprised the audience with the Stala and Botticelli Collections. Castro Interiors, in turn, had a huge success with the Tiffany sideboard, the Moon dining table, and the Marie shelf.'

What products were on show?
'Customers have been dazzled by the Stala Collection for its beautifully crafted crystal and magnificent brass detailing. On the other hand, we presented the Botticelli Collection with its elegant and perfect brass detailing.

In terms of furniture, as mentioned before, we have showcased the Tifanny Collection, which combines intricate brass details that give the piece a trailblazing character with the classicism of wood. The New Collections have been very well received by the public.

Regarding the furniture designs, The Marie bookshelf aims to express the burst of extravagance that once lived in the Versailles Palace. Crafted with the finest materials and attention to detail, this modern furniture piece is the perfect blend of form and function. Its sleek and modern design makes it a versatile piece that can seamlessly fit into any interior design style. Now as for The Moon Dining Table, crafted with meticulous artistry, this dining table is a masterpiece of natural wood, echoing the warmth and beauty of the sun's embrace. Brass accents delicately reflect the fleeting moments of their encounters, a silent reminder of their eternal longing.'

What's in store for Castro now? Are there any future fairs on the program?
'Castro will participate in the ICFF trade fair (The International Contemporary Furniture Fair), which takes place in New York from May 19th to 21st. So, mark the day and come visit Castro at this beautiful event at Stand 328. We're very excited about this participation, as it will be a great opportunity to meet our amazing clients, introduce the brand to the design community, and visit our clients in the region. And maybe we'll have some other surprises when it comes to trade shows later this year. Stay tuned!'
