Action, the non-food discounter, has announced an update on the first quarter of 2024.
Compared to the first quarter of 2023, net revenue increased by 20.9% to €3 billion. Like-for-like sales (excluding the effect of new stores) rose by 9.8%, once again demonstrating that Action remains relevant to customers of its existing stores. In the first quarter, Action reduced prices on more than 1,000 products, in addition to the price reductions on 2,500 products implemented last year. Action added 42 new stores to the total, ending the period with 2,608 stores across 12 European countries.
Customer appreciation is the main reason for the growth. In France, where Action now has 808 stores, Action was named the favourite retail chain for the second consecutive year ("Enseigne préférée des Français 2024").
To enable further growth, Action expanded its distribution network. In Peine (Germany), Action took over the management and operation of the Action distribution centre, increasing the number of Action employees by 279 colleagues. In Wallersdorf, near Munich, Action celebrated the topping out ceremony of the third Action distribution centre in Germany, where eventually 700 people will work. This distribution centre is being built according to the platinum standard of the DGNB, the German Sustainable Building Council. Action now has 535 stores in Germany.
Additionally, in the past quarter, Action formally committed to the Science Based Targets initiative. This step complements Action's goal of reducing CO2 emissions by 60% from its own activities (scopes 1 and 2) by 2030 compared to the 2021 baseline.
