The Karimoku Case furniture conceived under the direction of Danish studio Norm Architects in collaboration with Japanese architect Keiji Ashizawa was showcased at the Salone del Mobile Milano this year.
Karimoku Case is the brand launched in 2019 by Karimoku, Japan's leading manufacturer of wooden furniture, with Danish design studio Norm Architects as design director and Japanese architect Keiji Ashizawa as designer.
This year's exhibition at the Milano Salone, Karimoku Case made maximum use of a vast space of over 160 m2, and fully expressed the world of Karimoku Case.
Keiji Ashizawa was again in charge of the venue composition this year. The theme of the space was 'natural contrasts'. The space consisted of six areas based on home, office and hospitality concepts, and has a modern interior design, interwoven with traditional Japanese materials such as Washi paper. To create a natural contrast with the dark tones of the venue, each area was furnished with three different colours: pure oak, smoked oak, and a new standard colour, zelkova brown.
The stand was divided into six areas, each with a contemporary design and a high quality space that allowed visitors to experience the possibilities of wooden furniture.
The entrance to the booth welcomed visitors with a design inspired by the 'engawa', the space between the outdoors and the garden, and was a structure unique to Japanese architecture that also serves as a passageway. By placing products in this space, which gently divides the inside and outside the booth, we invited passers-in to freely come and experience the Karimoku Case, and to enjoy relaxing at engawa.
Each product expressed its wide range of uses through interior design proposals.
As last year, Yumi Nakata, a stylist, supervised the styling of the booth. The booth was decorated with works by a Japan-based ceramic artist to fully express the three main values of Karimoku Case: reverence for serene beauty, rich expression of materials, and timeless fascination.
