Strategic move opens door into Italy for Egger Group

The Austrian Egger Group has acquired a 60 percent stake in Cartfer Urbania S.r.l., a recycling company based in Urbania, Italy, situated in the heart of the Italian furniture industry. This strategic move expands Egger's international network of recycling collection sites, known as Egger Timberpak, and marks its entry into the Italian market. The investment underscores Egger's commitment to increasing the use of recycled wood and securing its raw material supply chain through backward integration.

The acquisition, completed on March 27, 2024, sees Egger taking majority ownership of Cartfer Urbania S.r.l. Previous owner Sara Burani will continue to serve on the management board and the skilled team of eight employees will also be retained. Financial details of the transaction remain confidential.

Giuseppe Conti, Head of Finance/Administration at the Caorso plant, highlighted the strategic significance of the acquisition, stating that Egger can leverage Cartfer Urbania's expertise to enhance its recycling capabilities. This collaboration will benefit Egger's chipboard plant in Caorso, which relies entirely on recycled wood.

Since its establishment in 2017, Cartfer Urbania has been a key partner to SAIB, an Italian wood-based materials manufacturer acquired by Egger in December 2022. The successful collaboration between Cartfer Urbania and SAIB is now set to deepen, with potential for further expansion at the Urbania site.

Egger's commitment to a circular economy is evident in its longstanding utilization of recycled wood. With almost 30 years of experience, Egger transforms discarded goods like old furniture and packaging into high-quality chipboard. The company's Timberpak sites collect, sort, and process recycled wood, ensuring a sustainable supply chain for its production facilities.
