German online retail faces moderate losses

German online retail began the new year with cautious optimism but faced moderate losses by the end of the first quarter. Despite efforts to rebound, the total merchandise turnover experienced a modest decline of 2.6 percent, amounting to 18.9 billion euros compared to the previous year's 19.4 billion euros. However, there were sectors within online retail that managed to mitigate losses and even achieve slight gains.

Key sectors such as fashion, electronics, and entertainment products demonstrated resilience by limiting their losses. Digital services also experienced a significant uptick, with a 14.59% increase amounting to 2.725 billion euros. However, the furniture sector remained in the red, with a notable 4.3 percent decline in turnover, totalling 3.49 billion euros. Household and home textile turnover also saw a significant drop of 8.3 percent, while furniture, lamps, and decoration experienced a more modest decline of 3 percent.
