In the year 2024, the trade fair sector in Germany faced significant disruptions due to strikes, affecting as many as 50 events across the country. From early January to mid-March, strikes on railways, local public transport, and airports created serious challenges for both organisers and attendees, leading to a decline in visitor numbers and financial losses.
Despite a rail strike lasting several days, around 140,000 visitors from all branches of trade and sales channels came to Ambiente, Christmasworld and Creativeworld at Messe Frankfurt this year.
According to a survey conducted by AUMA - the Association of the German Trade Fair Industry, the strikes had a notable impact on the trade fair landscape. The first quarter of the year saw a substantial decrease of 222,000 visitors compared to previous years, representing an average drop of eleven percent. This decline was attributed to the strikes, particularly those at Deutsche Bahn, which affected at least 21 trade fairs.
The repercussions of the strikes extended beyond visitor numbers, affecting exhibiting companies and visitors alike. Last-minute rebookings and additional expenses for shuttle services resulted in higher costs for many participants. Moreover, increased communication efforts were required to navigate the logistical challenges posed by the strikes. As a result, both exhibitors and organisers anticipated revenue losses due to cancelled trade fair visits.
The strikes not only disrupted domestic travel but also tarnished Germany's reputation as a premier trade fair destination on the international stage. Known for its reliability and efficiency in hosting over 350 trade fairs annually, Germany's image suffered as travel disruptions hindered access to the country's renowned trade fair venues.
Despite the setbacks, Germany remains a key player in the global trade fair industry, with 330 trade fairs scheduled for the year, including many of national and international significance.
