China experienced a 4% decline in wooden furniture exports

In 2023, China experienced a 4% decline in wooden furniture exports, totalling US$24.19 billion, according to China Customs data. Despite this downturn, the United States continued to be the primary destination for China's wooden furniture, with almost 30% of exports directed there, marking a slight 1% increase from the previous year.

China's wooden furniture market is notably diverse, with products reaching over 200 countries worldwide. Surprisingly, the top 5 export destinations, each accounting for over US$1 billion in exports, only represented 53% of the total exports for the country in 2023.

While there was a notable 15% increase in exports to the UK, reaching US$1.45 billion, both Australia and Japan experienced declines of 11% and 12%, respectively, with exports amounting to US$1.44 billion and US$1.39 billion.

Despite these fluctuations, Chinese wooden furniture exporters have grappled with significant challenges in recent years. Barriers to entry in destination countries, particularly anti-dumping measures, technical standards, and environmental certifications, have posed obstacles to export growth. Moreover, escalating environmental protection standards have inflated production costs and dampened competitiveness.
