German retail expects good Easter sales

For this year's Easter business in retail, the German Retail Association (HDE) expects sales of 2.2 billion euros. On this occasion around the Easter holiday, 41 percent of consumers plan to spend money. This was the result of a population-representative survey conducted on behalf of the HDE among 1,500 individuals. Compared to the previous year, sales in the Easter business are thus expected to remain stable.

'Easter is associated with important sales impulses for the retail sector. The stores offer a wide range of seasonal goods, with food being particularly popular among consumers,' said HDE Managing Director Stefan Genth. According to the HDE survey, those who buy gifts for Easter mainly opt for food. While 74 percent plan to give food as gifts, nearly 47 percent plan to buy flowers, and just over 45 percent plan to buy decorative items.

From the perspective of the HDE, Easter business this year could be a particularly important impulse for the further development of consumer sentiment in Germany. 'Consumer sentiment among consumers is cautious due to the difficult economic and political situation worldwide. This year's Easter business can help improve consumer sentiment somewhat,' said Genth. After Christmas, Easter is the second-largest holiday-related consumer occasion.
