Amazon emerges as clear victor in home furnishings battle against Walmart

In the ongoing rivalry between e-commerce giants Amazon and Walmart, the battleground of home furnishings has seen a definitive victor emerge. Since 2020, Amazon has surged ahead, widening the gap between itself and Walmart by more than 10 percentage points, according to recent analysis.

A study conducted by PYMNTS Intelligence delves into the competition between these retail titans for market dominance, revealing Amazon's commanding presence in the consumer furniture and home furnishings sector. In the fourth quarter of 2023, Amazon held a substantial 18.8% share of the market, compared to Walmart's 7.3%. This stark contrast marks a significant departure from the equal footing both companies held in the first quarter of 2020, each boasting a 9.9% share. However, Amazon quickly seized momentum, rapidly expanding its market share to 12.5% by the second quarter of 2020 and continuing to surge ahead.

Throughout 2023, Amazon's dominance only intensified, with its share of the furniture and home furnishings market escalating from 14% in the first quarter to 16.2% by the third quarter, culminating in the current 18.8% share. Conversely, Walmart experienced a slight decline in its share, reaching a peak of 7.7% in the second quarter.
