Geberit celebrates 150th anniversary

The history of Geberit began in 1874 when Albert Gebert founded a one-man business in the historic centre of Rapperswil, Switzerland. Thirty years later, the company's founder, Albert Gebert, developed a lead-lined wooden cistern. The success story continued with the invention of the first plastic cistern in 1952 and the concealed cistern in 1964. Today, the company, with its headquarters in Rapperswil-Jona, employs over 11,000 people globally and operates 26 manufacturing facilities.

In 2024, the Geberit Group will look back on 150 years of corporate history. Since its inception in 1874 in Rapperswil by Lake Zurich, Switzerland, the company has been a pioneer in the plumbing industry. 'Our comprehensive system solutions continue to set the standard, then, now, and in the future,' says Christian Buhl, CEO of Geberit.

150 years of tomorrow
Installers, wholesalers, building owners, and consumers have trusted the company's innovative power for 150 years. 'Making good things even better has been our motto from day one. We always place our customers at the centre of everything we do,'says Christian Buhl. An example of this innovative power is the Geberit concealed cistern, briefly known as UP, which was launched in 1964. Today, Geberit concealed cisterns and the blue Geberit Duofix installation frames are setting the tone in the plumbing industry.

Stable Geberit DNA
The values and objectives of Geberit have largely remained unchanged over the past 150 years: a down-to-earth attitude, quality consciousness, and the pursuit of excellence still characterise the company culture today. The modest family business of the past has now grown into the European market leader for sanitary products. Currently, the globally active Geberit Group has more than 11,000 employees and 26 production locations, four of which are outside Europe.
