New Gemla collection presented at Stockholm Furniture Fair

'The result is a completely unique, yet obvious expression'

Gemla, Sweden's oldest furniture brand, presented its new products at Stockholm Furniture Fair that skillfully combine the company's traditional craftsmanship technique of steam bending wood with modern, contemporary Swedish design.

GEMYT by Sami Kallio
A brand-new steam-bent wooden armchair GEMYT by Sami Kallio, who previously designed the Stam and Nordic series for Gemla, was on display at this year's furniture fair. The design is founded on the strong backrest tray, which is sculpted from a single piece of solid steam-bent beech wood. The design language is deliberately pared down (with a certain flirtation with the 60s), which means that the armchair fits into most contexts. With great care in the processing, the soft organics meet the sharpness of the backrest. The seat is upholstered with a natural filling consisting of horsehair and wool. The covering is made of vegetable-tanned leather from Tärnsjö. The sturdy and comfortable armchair is ideal for restaurants or public spaces and, as always with Gemla, the colour scheme can be customised for each individual project.

ZINC by Mathieu Gustafsson
The new ZINC bar stool in solid ash, where each individual part is steam-bent from an originally straight piece of wood, is designed by Mathieu Gustafsson. 'Mathieu is a master at finding the sensuality in simplicity. He has a methodical and experimental working method where he always seeks new ways to solve, and challenge established principles. The work on the bar stool has been developed together with us during a thorough process. The result is a completely unique, yet obvious expression,' says owner Benny Hermansson.

The Zinc bar stool is an excellent example of the interaction between classic steam bending and a modern, contemporary design language. With great perfection, the chair's curved back legs grow into the backrest tray, thus forming both a backrest and armrest. The footrest also has a completely new expression. A wooden ring in a flat oval shape creates high durability and a recessed wear surface in solid sand-cast aluminum ensures beautiful ageing. The seat is padded with horsehair and wool and upholstered in leather from Tärnsjö and, as always, the colours can be customised for each individual project.
