Charles Stendig, renowned furniture importer, passed away at 99

Charles Stendig, a pioneering figure in the world of furniture importation, has passed away at the age of 99. The American philanthropist and businessman was the founder of Stendig Inc. Throughout his illustrious career spanning nearly two decades, Stendig made significant contributions to the American design landscape by introducing modern furniture from Europe to the United States.

Stendig's journey as a furniture importer was marked by his relentless pursuit of quality and innovation. Undeterred by geographical barriers, he embarked on numerous trips to factories across Europe, including ventures behind the Iron Curtain during a time of geopolitical tension. His travels were motivated by a deep-seated commitment to bringing the finest European designs to American consumers.

Charles and his wife Eleanore were philanthropists throughout their lives, supporting several organisations. The New York Times said: 'Even in his 90s, Charlie frequented the gym three days a week. He was a collector of antiquities, and though he donated most to museums, he kept a few favourites in his home. Charlie maintained relationships around the world, but his favourite place was Helsinki.' He will be dearly missed.
