Decline in e-commerce hits Swedish electronics and furniture industries hard

In a significant setback for the e-commerce sector, turnover has taken a sharp downturn for the second consecutive year. Among the hardest-hit industries are consumer electronics and furniture.

According to recent data from the Swedish Trade Federation's E-commerce Indicator, Swedes' e-commerce turnover reached SEK 144 billion in 2023, marking an 8 percent decrease from the previous year's figure of SEK 156 billion. This decline follows the peak year of 2021, when turnover soared to SEK 171 billion.

The decline in turnover can be attributed to several factors, including the inflationary pressures that have strained household budgets and the deflation of e-commerce activity that was inflated during the pandemic.

While the number of online shoppers remains steady, there has been a noticeable decrease in the average total purchase amount per year. In 2021, the average stood at SEK 2,493, but by 2023, it had dropped to SEK 2,126.

One industry feeling the impact of this downturn is consumer electronics, where the average purchase amount has plummeted from SEK 1,702 in 2021 to SEK 1,290 in 2023. Consequently, the industry has witnessed a substantial loss of SEK 10.9 billion in turnover during this period.

Similarly, the furniture industry has experienced a severe blow, with turnover declining by a staggering -38 percent from 2022 to 2023. This decline correlates with a decrease in the average purchase amount from SEK 3,035 to SEK 2,284 over the same period, resulting in nearly five billion SEK disappearing from e-commerce turnover within a year.
