For this new collaboration, Roche Bobois asked Christophe Delcourt to explore the interplay between two iconic materials in the brand’s history: wood and stone, specifically walnut and travertine. The former contributes luxurious, raw structure, while the latter adds the beauty of imperfection. Spanning a table, a sideboard and seating, Palatine is the designer’s love letter to Italy. He pays tribute to the country’s inspirational palaces, classic and contemporary architecture, and the full breadth of details – a column here, a recess or projection there – that catch the light so beautifully.
Christophe Delcourt made a name for himself in the 1990s with a range of metal ornaments that he designed and produced himself – artisanal workmanship is this self-taught designer’s signature. 'We have been working with Christophe for 20 years. He stands out for his innovative use of raw materials and sculptural shapes, his artisanal approach to design, the unique classicism that suffuses his projects, and the warm sensuality expressed in his work. He also has a flair for rooting pieces in their era, while ensuring they stand the test of time. We believe this enduring quality is more important than ever, and as manufacturers we feel it is a factor worth highlighting and taking into consideration ,' says Nicolas Roche.
The Palatine sofa showcases the same workmanship in terms of full proportions. Very comfortable to the eye with plump, piped cushions in a pillow shape, the sofa has clean lines and a timeless aesthetic. The low-profile silhouette is anchored in the Roche Bobois DNA. The piping draws interweaving lines that encircle the sofa and highlight the interlocking seats and armrests. The new wool-alpaca bouclé fabric upholstery enhances the plump, soft aspect of this generous and inviting piece.
