Foscarini's president maps out future course with Ingo Maurer

As Foscarini, the Veneto-based pioneer of contemporary lighting, celebrates its 40th anniversary, its president, Carlo Urbinati, sets his sights on a future marked by collaboration with the renowned Ingo Maurer. In an interview with WWD, Urbinati unveils plans to bolster Ingo Maurer's presence in North America while expanding its reach across Asia and Europe.

The acquisition of 90 percent of Ingo Maurer GmbH in 2022 marked a significant milestone for Foscarini, with the remaining 10 percent retained by Maurer's daughter, Sarah Utermöhlen. Ingo Maurer, often hailed as a "poet of light," gained prominence in the 1960s with iconic designs like the Bulb lamp, now a part of the Museum of Modern Art's collection.

Urbinati emphasises Foscarini's commitment to preserving Ingo Maurer's distinct identity, intending to support its growth without assimilating it into Foscarini's portfolio. He underscores the importance of maintaining separate creative identities while leveraging synergies for international expansion.

Founded in 1981 in Murano, Foscarini has evolved into a global force in lighting design. Urbinati's leadership steered the company towards innovation, exemplified by collaborations with acclaimed designers such as Ferruccio Laviani, Jozeph Forakis, and the late Rodolfo Dordoni. Despite setbacks, including Dordoni's passing in August, Foscarini remains dedicated to pushing boundaries in design.

Looking ahead, Urbinati highlights the partnership with Danish designer Felicia Arvid, whose award-winning Pli pendant lamp signifies Foscarini's commitment to nurturing emerging talent. Despite market fluctuations, Foscarini remains optimistic about its prospects, with plans to expand distribution channels and strengthen its online presence.

The synergy between Foscarini and Ingo Maurer represents a pivotal moment in the lighting industry's history. Urbinati sees this collaboration as an opportunity to elevate both brands while preserving their individuality. With an eye towards Milan Design Week, Foscarini prepares to unveil its anniversary publication, showcasing its evolution and vision for the future.
