Norwegian Economic Report 2024 highlights need for predictable industrial policies

Norsk Industri recently unveiled its annual Economic Report for 2024, revealing a significant divergence in outlooks among member companies concerning turnover, exports, and employment. While some sectors thrive, the report highlights a global economic slowdown affecting the export industry.

At a macro level, there is still reported employment growth, albeit with nuanced intricacies. Simultaneously, investments in competence development and internal training are underway, showcasing the industry's creativity to enhance recruitment.

A critical factor affecting many companies is what the report terms the "battle for power". Despite strides in energy efficiency and technology, the report underscores the necessity for improved framework conditions. Additionally, it emphasises the urgency of swiftly implementing more renewable energy sources to meet heightened climate demands in the upcoming years.

The report encapsulates valuable insights from companies, including concerns about employer's tax, wealth tax, and industry policy framework conditions such as CO2 price compensation and offshore wind regulations. However, the overarching theme emerging from the report is the resounding call for predictability.

Knut E. Sunde, Acting CEO of Norwegian Industry, commented on the findings, stating, 'This year's survey has given us many valuable insights and some food for thought about where we should focus our main efforts in the coming year. We see that the eternal struggle for predictability continues, but companies find it challenging to achieve. To retain, develop, and attract new industry to the country, increased predictability is the most important thing politicians can offer.'
