Following the recovery of consumer confidence in Germany at the end of 2023, consumers are once again more pessimistic about the future in the new year. This is evident from the current Consumer Barometer by the German Retail Association (HDE).

The index dropped compared to the previous month but remained above the level of the previous year. Developments in fiscal policy and economic prospects are causing uncertainty, leading to a correspondingly subdued mood.
The HDE Consumer Barometer is based on a monthly survey of 1,600 people about their inclination to make purchases, their propensity to save, their financial situation, and other factors relevant to consumption.
