Container shipping rates are skyrocketing!

The new year begins with tensions within the container shipping industry as a result of Houthi attacks in the Red Sea. According to the Shanghai Containerized Freight Index, container rates between China and Europe have skyrocketed, from $1497 for a twenty-foot container (just before Christmas) to $2694. Even the Danish shipping company Maersk, which planned to continue sailing through the Red Sea and the Suez Canal, is temporarily avoiding the area following a Houthi attack.

There is consideration of launching direct attacks on Houthi rebels in Yemen. Iran is also sending a warship to the Red Sea. The situation is causing shipping companies to detour around the Cape of Good Hope, leaving little room to decommission and scrap old ships. This is reported by Nieuwsblad Transport.
