Old mattresses from Switzerland recycled in the Netherlands

This month (October), Matratzen-Allianz is conducting a pilot project to implement sustainable mattress recycling in Switzerland. The mattresses are sent to the Dutch mattress recycling company RetourMatras that processes used mattresses into reusable raw materials.

'We are thrilled with the enthusiasm surrounding the unique RetourMatras method for extracting raw materials from discarded mattresses. As far as we're concerned, no mattress should end up in an incinerator anymore. We hope that this will soon apply to Switzerland as well, and that we can initiate more circular collaborations in Europe', RetourMatras mentions on LinkedIn.

Matratzen-Allianz is collecting old mattresses in containers at three locations in Switzerland. From there the containers are transported to the mattress recycling facility in the Netherlands. The aim of the pilot project is to better understand how mattress recycling could be applied in Switzerland.

'One thing is clear: Establishing a new recycling system is complicated but feasible', Matratzen-Allianz explains. 'We are looking forward to the experiences and feedback from our partners, as well as the subsequent analysis and ecological balance.'
